USCIS Update to Adoption Webpage

NOTICE: USCIS Update to Adoption Webpage

Dear Adoption Community,

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently made updates to the webpage U.S. Citizenship for an Adopted Child. These updates were made in response to frequent inquiries they have received from USCIS field offices and the public. Specifically, the new information:

  • Explains what date will appear on the Certificate of Citizenship reflecting the date of citizenship under INA § 320 or naturalization under INA § 322;

  • Highlights filing options for adopted children of U.S. military members or U.S. government employees;

  • Clarifies that USCIS can only mail Certificates of Citizenship to USCIS field offices abroad for members and dependents of the U.S. military;

  • Includes a new section discussing the adjudication of the Form N-600K for children who were previously issued a U.S. passport.

In particular USCIS would like to highlight the new drop-down section Children Who Already Have a U.S. Passport. This information is important for families residing abroad who are considering filing both a Form N-600K and a U.S. passport application.

Please share this update with any professionals or families that may find this updated guidance helpful. If you have any questions or need additional guidance, please feel free to contact Public.Engagement@uscis.dhs.gov.

Sincerely,

The Office of Children’s Issues
